Stroke Rehabilitation Garden — Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn

I designed a therapeutic garden for stroke patients in a tight 5000mm × 20000mm stone courtyard at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The goal was to create a space that helps patients move, recover, and relax, despite the small, confined location.

My Approach

I came up with all the ideas for the garden, turning the courtyard into a functional, calming, and engaging space. Every element was designed to fit the narrow layout while providing meaningful therapy opportunities and sensory stimulation.

Key Features

Smart layout: Paths, seating, and activity zones maximize safe movement and rehab exercises.
Planting strategy: I chose shade-tolerant and drought-hardy plants that thrive in sandy soil, including ornamental grasses, salvia, hydrangeas, and liriope, providing year-round texture, color, and sensory interest.
Recreation & rest: A small putting green and quiet seating areas allow gentle exercise and moments of calm.
Accessible design: Wide paths and gentle slopes ensure patients can move safely and independently.

Outcome

The courtyard, once unused, is now a healing garden where patients can practice movement, enjoy nature, and find calm
